Why this matters
The tools a society uses shape how people live, work, and connect. Knowing how we moved from stone axes to computers helps you see where the next change is heading, and why people are talking about ideas like Society 5.0.
The idea
Human society has passed through several stages, each defined by the main technology that supported daily life:
- Hunter-gatherer society (from the birth of humanity). People survived by hunting and gathering, helped by stone axes, bows and arrows, fire, and language.
- Agrarian society (from about 13,000 BCE). People settled on fertile land and grew crops, supported by writing, agricultural tools, astronomy, and irrigation.
- Industrialized society (from the mid-18th century). The steam engine sparked the industrial revolution, and large factories enabled mass production, transport, and consumption.
- Information society (from the latter half of the 20th century). Radio, television, and the computer arrived, and automation spread.
The next step is Society 5.0: a human-centred society that tightly links cyberspace (the virtual world built by computers) with physical space (the real world), so that economic growth and the solving of social problems happen together.

Worked example
A passage describes people who "settled on fertile land and led a life growing crops, supported by writing and irrigation." Which stage is this? The clues (settling, farming, irrigation) point to the agrarian society, the second stage, which came after hunter-gatherer society and before the industrialized society.
