Why this matters
The information society runs on new technologies you already touch every day: the route an app suggests, a voice assistant at home, a recommendation feed. Knowing what each one does helps you understand both their benefits and the new problems they bring.
The idea
Several technologies get a lot of attention right now:
- Big Data: vast, varied collections of data. Its three elements are volume (how much), variety (how many types), and generation/update frequency (how often it changes).
- AI (Artificial Intelligence): computers that mimic human intellectual behaviour, used in autonomous driving, telemedicine, smart agriculture, and smart homes.
- Machine learning: computers learning from large data to extract rules and patterns.
- IoT (Internet of Things): connecting appliances and objects to the internet so they communicate with each other. A smart home uses IoT and AI for a more comfortable life.
- VR (Virtual Reality): a simulated environment that feels real.
- AR (Augmented Reality): adding computer-generated information onto the real world.
These technologies also change daily life. Technostress covers the mental and physical problems of computer use, including technophobia (anxiety about using computers), techno-addiction (excessive dependency), and VDT disorder (shoulder stiffness and eye strain from long screen time). A wider social problem is the digital divide: the gap between people who can use information technology and those who cannot.

Worked example
You read: "An environment where all objects are connected to the internet and communicate with each other." Which technology is this? The key idea, objects connected and talking to each other over the internet, is IoT, not AI or VR. If instead the description were "computers adding information onto the real world," the answer would be AR.
